In Proverbs 20:27 Solomon says,
“The spirit of man [that factor in human personality which proceeds immediately from God] is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.” Amplified
Wow, to me that means He put His “light” in me! This spirit distinguishes us from the animals. Although animals have a soul, life, vitality; see Deuteronomy 12:23, they don’t have the “breath” of God! He breathed His “spirit” or “breath” of life into man’s nostrils (Genesis 2:7). And even though we are born into fallen world, into sin, God’s lamp has been placed within each of us to be able to search the inner self.
For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus. Romans 2:14,15
God has given us His conscience as a light to help us distinguish between good and evil…and ultimately to lead us back to Him. Paul admonishes us in Rom 1:20 “that since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” And again he says, “therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
These are really troubling times we live in…but we have His Spirit within us!
