Counting Pentecost ~ Day Thirty ~ The Wilderness of Sin

Update May 7th 2018 – by Randy

Today is the 2nd day of the 5th week of seven weeks. Today is the 30th day of the counting of fifty days from the day of the waving of the Omer on the morrow after the Sabbath.

Six years ago I wrote, “of course they immediately start to murmer” which sounds condescending to me now. I believe that at the time I understood that the Israelites were an illustration of the selfishness of all men but I think it has become more glaring to me since.

I think most bible versions use the term “wilderness” which I never stopped to think, that in the middle east, a wilderness is a scorching desert. These people had been walking through the desert for a month, camping in tents, I am sure with sand blowing in. Maybe it isn’t surprising they were complaining.

I believe we are living in the most comfortable time in history in probably the most comfortable place on the planet and if you listen, we are all complaining, about everything, things that are really pretty trivial, the weather, the traffic, the way the guy at the lunch counter treated us.

Sometimes I feel like I am in a episode of The Twilight Zone.

Thirty days into their journey, as they arrive in the wilderness of Sin, the children of Jacob run out of the Matzah that they brought with them, and of course they immediately start to murmer, but of course God has a plan….

all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt.  The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.  The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the LORD’S hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day. – Exo 16
