A Study in Brokenness

A Tale of Three Kings

This tale is the story of submission and authority within the kingdom of God. It is a study in brokenness…yours! Gene Edwards is the author of around thirty Christian books, the best known of these being “The Divine Romance,” “A Tale of Three Kings,” and “The Chronicles of The Door.” He holds conferences around the country on the deeper Christian life and is part of the house church movement.

Two portions of the nature of God are portrayed. One a gift–is the power of God…immersion into the Spirit. The other, not a gift but an inheritance. A gift is worn on the outer person; an inheritance is planted deep inside–like a seed. Many pray for the power of God. Those prayers sound powerful, sincere, godly, and without ulterior motive. But hidden under such a prayer and fervor, however, are ambition, a craving for fame, the desire to be considered a spiritual giant. The person who prays such a prayer may not even know it, but dark motives and desires are in his heart…in your heart. There is a vast difference between the outward clothing of the Spirit’s power and the inward filling of the Spirit’s life. In the first, despite the power, the hidden man of the heart may remain unchanged. In the latter, that “monster” is dealt with.

I cannot stop reading this book…and then re-reading and then reading it again. It is a page turner, and in every successive reading, I find another layer! I have found a new author…new to me anyhow! Edwards’ study in brokenness is incredibly easy to read, and at the same time penetrating and timeless. It is a simple, powerful, and beautiful story, I promise you will be profoundly touched.

I read this book hoping to find answers and healing for my bitterness toward the “organized church”. I found that–and so much more. Even if you have not personally been devastated by “Christian to Christian” clashes, or known someone who has–this book will give you insight into your own heart–are you seeking the “gift” or the “inheritance”? When I picked this book up I was looking for validation for my feelings of outrage against those that hurt me. But what I found was–the problem was in me.
