We are their Parents–not their friends

I listen to a couple of Christian radio stations, going back and forth between the two to catch different genres of music and different DJ’s. My favorite guy to catch is Brant Hansen, he’s on Air1 3-7PM Central time. He has a quirky sense of humor while at the time sharing some profound and deep thoughts. He wrote an article about Miley Cyrus and her performance .

Train up a Child

When did it become acceptable to dress and encourage our young children to be seen as sexy?

His article reminded me of a YouTube video, I recently watched, of a very young girl 4-6 years old, at a wedding reception. She was the center of attention while she dances to a hip-hop/techno selection of several different songs. She was dressed as maybe a flower girl or at least part of the wedding party. It was cute that she seemed to have so much rhythm at such an early age. But, it didn’t take long before her cute dance moves turned into her gyrating and dancing in a very provocative manner. Well everyone at the reception went wild, clapping, whistling, encouraging her on.

I didn’t catch her act…

Although I did not see what Miley Cyrus did in her recent performance, I’ve heard some descriptions and it made my heart just sink. Some seem disgusted by it while others don’t seem to care one way or the other. Those that are dismayed at her performance, wonder where did she go wrong…or what’s wrong with her parents and/or managers. But it seems to me she’s giving the public just what they want.

Where do you shop?

I know my daughter-in-law struggles to find age appropriate clothes for my grand-daughters. I see the clothes in Wal-Mart to Macy’s and most of the clothes are just adult clothes made smaller.

Maybe we should be looking in the mirror!

Brant has some interesting insight into not only what happened to Miley, but what is happening to all of our children, in a culture seemingly obsessed with sexualizing everything. I hope you will read his thoughts here Sorry, Miley

Adults are supposed to protect young people. Adults are supposed to refuse to treat young people like little gods, put them on pedestals, and parade them on stages. But adults do it, anyway, and our culture is just dumb, and just numb, enough to act like it’s perfectly normal. Turns out, as we’ve always known, celebrity messes with people’s heads, particularly the young.” Brant Hansen
