A great tool to increase your understanding of the Bible, I am trying to get this methodology down on paper before I forget.
I was searching for the definition of a word in the Bible specifically “prudent” and I was getting lots of differing answers.
The verse it was used in was Proverbs 22:3 – The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, But the naive go on, and are punished for it.
This is the website: http://www.searchgodsword.org/
Right there on the homepage you type your word and choose your Bible version
Prudent gets you 17 hits: http://www.searchgodsword.org/desk/?l=en&query=prudent§ion=0&translation=nas&sr=1&Enter=Perform+Search
If you read all of these verses you may notice that prudent seems to be being used more than one way, with more than one definition. Pr 19:14 jumped out at me, it seemed totally different.
Proverbs 19:14 – House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD.
So I clicked on the tiny link to original Hebrew and am taken to this page: http://www.searchgodsword.org/isb/bible.cgi?query=pr+19:14&translation=nas&ot=bhs&nt=na&sr=1&l=en
Here I can click on “prudent” in the verse and I get a pop up and that find the original Hebrew word in this case was sakal, with the definition:
to be prudent, be circumspect, wisely understand, prosper 1. (Qal) to be prudent, be circumspect 2. (Hiphil) 1. to look at or upon, have insight 2. to give attention to, consider, ponder, be prudent 3. to have insight, have comprehension 1b 3. insight, comprehension (subst) 1. to cause to consider, give insight, teach 1b 4. the teachers, the wise 1. to act circumspectly, act prudently, act wisely 2. to prosper, have success 3. to cause to prosper
Back to my original 17 hits for Pr 22:3, I go through the process again and find the original Hebrew word was `aruwm, and this is defined:
Back to my 17 hits look at Pr 12:23 – A prudent man conceals knowledge, But the heart of fools proclaims folly.
Again the word “prudent” in English was translated fron the Hebrew word `aruwm. Now I have a better understanding of what Pr 22:3 meant in the original Hebrew.
I LOVE this tool.
