Counting Pentecost ~ Day Five

update April 12th 2018

Today is the 5th day of the 1st week of seven weeks. Today is the 5th day of the counting of fifty days from the day of the waving of the Omer on the morrow after the Sabbath.

Update April 9th 2015

Have you ever had Mary’s experience. You hear from God and you know He has spoken to you. You’re so excited and He tells you, “go share this truth with others”. But when you do, it’s not received with the same joy you received it, it may not even be believed? At first the 11 disciples did not believe Mary. I wonder how Mary felt about their unbelief? How should we handle unbelief, when we share what we believe to be the truth of God, spoken to our hearts, but then it is not accepted by others. I think we share it and then let the Holy Spirit confirm it in their heart as well. What do you do?

Today is 5 days of the omer.

19 Abib/Nissan 31 AD

Jesus *said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'” John 20:15-17

Because Mary stayed behind, weeping, she was the first to see the risen Lord! But have you ever had a problem with this passage? Why does Jesus tell her to “stop clinging to Me”, or in other versions, “touch Me not”, or “do not hold onto Me”. In all of the 18 versions I looked at, it always had this tone of Jesus saying, hands off. That has always struck me as out of character of Him. He always went against the norm of the times and treated the women as equals. Now look at this commentary I found in the Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge and tell me what you think:

Touch: Or rather, “embrace me not,” or, “cling not to me,” (μη [Strong’s G3361], μου [Strong’s G3450], απτον), “Spend no more time with me now in joyful gratulations. For I am not yet immediately going to ascend to my Father; you will have several opportunities of seeing me again; but go and tell my disciples that I shall depart to my Father and your Father.”

And when we read further into the gospel accounts, He goes on to show Himself to His disciples and hundreds of others for 40 more days. Even saying to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” So, I don’t think Jesus meant, you’re not allowed to touch Me, before I ascend to the Father, when clearly He is touching and being touched, eating with and being with, all those that were fortunate to see Him before He went and sat at the right hand of God. I hope this little insight brings you as much joy as it did me. Happy counting!

The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge has been an enduring cross-reference resource for Bible students worldwide. This highly respected and nearly exhaustive compilation of cross-references was developed by R.A. Torrey from references in the Rev. Thomas Scott’s Commentary and the Comprehensive Bible. With nearly 500,000 cross-references it is the most thorough source available. I just recently found this “treasure”, the one I use came with the e-Sword program that you can download for free. It has so many resources, information and applications, it has been a real blessing.
